A machinist from Austin named Mauro,
Was riven with a terrible sorrow.
"I can't make it rhyme,
I've tried time after time."
But he'll still be trying tomorrow.

Re: I've done a very bad thing
There once was a girlfriend of Steven,
Who wanted a way to get even.
She said with a laugh,
As she sharpened a staff,
"I hope there isn't much Bleeding".

Re: LittleMachineShop bluetooth DRO on PM-932M installed
I like the pictures. I have a similar Grizzly RF45 clone (G0755) with a glass scales DRO installed, 3 axes (Z on the head). I have about the same invested in that, but the head reading, while it works, has not proven to be of much use... I use a separate quill DRO all the time. When I do arcs on the...

Re: Tractor/Cart/Mower Advice
I had a 3710 with a frame-mounted backhoe, quick connect bucket plus a bale-spear and pallet forks. It would grudgingly lift 2,000 lbs. in the loader, just don't get that much weight all the way up. Over the three Kubota tractors I have owned, I lost one hydraulic cylinder and two hydraulic hoses, p...

How to figure out motor requirements?
So I also got bit by this bug that seems to be going around. I am starting to CNC convert the mill portion of a G9729 (because I already own it) and so far I have most of the process figured out. Except for the stepper motor size. I know I want closed loop steppers. My experience in machining has be...

Re: How close is close enough?
I am no Adam or Keith, but I always try for a thousandth. If I was interested in production work, I would probably be happy with less precision most of the time, because when you're reducing something by 20 thousandths, it doesn't really matter if a few more chips come off one side that the other. Y...

Re: A retrospective about ENCO
My one takeaway from ENCO is their catalog. I still use it as a reference for various items and their "normal" prices. Things like drill bits and carbide inserts... when I see them on ebay (new old stock items, for example) I can see if it is a good deal or not. Otherwise I feel like most ...

Re: World Metrology Day
IDK if anyone bothered to look it up, but the U.S. was one of the original 17 signatories of the Treaty of the Meter, in 1875. Argue about the lack of progress on implementation all you want, but Metric is a legal system of measurement in the U.S.

Re: "Setting up Between Centers"
I thought the same thing. However, there must be a method to the madness, because anyone that can straighten an 18' long shaft within 0.002" using a torch and a little water has to know something.
Or the answer could be simpler, maybe he doesn't have a LH tool that uses the right insert.

Re: Circle Milling
While it is mainly done on a lathe, not a mill, you might want to watch Joe Pie's Youtube video on making aluminum washers 0.006" thick. I think it is relevant to your problem.

Re: Situating Fixed Tools in New Shop
For what it's worth, on my last shop rearrangement I put the lathe sort of in the corner, with room behind and on the tailstock end for access. I set up my mill about 36" behind where I stand at the lathe. The logic is that where you stand is essentially unusable space for equipment. If you pla...
