Re: Lathe DRO recommendation
Like Pete said, you probably want to mount the scale a bit off the casting. You typically only need 3 points of support, the scale ends and the reader head (which probably uses two mounting screws, but not that far apart). I mounted one scale using couple 1" pieces of 1/4" x 1-1/2" al...

You are right. I came back to edit my post, but yes, Goliath Grouper is the "new" name for them. I never gave any thought to the biblical implications of that name change. LOL.

Re: Use for Big 12V Motor?
I'm no tree-hugger, but owning one of these reels may not be something to be proud of. I remember those reels being used in the 80's to haul up "Mammoth Grouper" (the politically correct name for a Jewfish). They were out of my price class even then. That was right after Fidel snookered J...

If you have a vertical mill, using a rotary table (with the axis horizontal), a boring head will make any half-circle within the constraints of your boring head. You could mount stock on the rotary table and use the boring bar and head as a cutter (cutting edge pointed outward), moving the work into...

Re: Chinese DRO for Mill
The scale has some internal absolute marking at the midpoint. The instructions for my Chinese DRO say you must cross that point after you invoke the function, at which point the DRO adjusts the reading to the offset from (the hidden) absolute that was saved during the last power down. Almost everyth...

Re: Machine Tools Should be Floppy
IDK if that was on your page or someone else's Utoob channel. I do know there are people who troll those comment sections, trying to stir up arguments. You can search for their other comments on youtube and see them doing it to others. Perhaps you can throw back a different lie at them. OR, if it is...

Re: Digital calipers
"When I was a lad" (lol) Made in Japan was synonymous with low quality junk... kind of like "made in China" is today. At some point the Chinese will upgrade their products the way Japan did. The big battle will be keeping the "blueprints" to our newest products out of t...

Re: How I Ended up with a Machine Shop
I don't have a machine shop. I do have some machines, in my shop, but I am in no way fully equipped. My back story on that starts something like 45 years ago, when the place I worked at had a special project going on and I spent some time on a milling machine making plates for mounting pillow blocks...

Re: Digital calipers
I use calipers all the time. But I use a micrometer on the final cut(s) when I need to be tight. My observation has been that I cannot get consistent readings consecutively with the same calipers on the same work piece. I frequently find that after measuring a larger piece, when I close the calipers...

Re: Punches and dies
I never tried to do it yet myself, but I read that you use an "angle of clearance", which is basically a taper, of "1 to 2 degrees". Obviously, the taper gets larger at the bottom of the die, to provide clearance for the slug to fall through. I don't have a reference handy, but I...

Re: Caliper for Marking
If it suits your need, inscribing with a caliper is fine. But remember your line will not be exactly where you think it is. When you place the one jaw such that it rides on the side, you just formed a right triangle, and the caliper reading is the hypotenuse. Your line will mark one side of the tria...

Re: OT: Shop concrete floor paint
A guy named Ray Caniglia just built a new shop, and posted a video of his way of sealing the floor:

Basically, it was a sealer (already suggested) and a wax like they use in hospitals. He says it isn't slippery, it's cheap and lasts.
