Re: Anyone like shapers?
probably slower, can't say. Correct. They cut less than 50% of the time due to the return stroke and overrun. some skill is required to get the grind on the tooling right. Also correct, but virtually the same as for lathe operation. Skills that anyone who claims to be a "machinist" should...

Well done, Kelly.
I suspect your work won't interfere with the proper performance of the caliper. You did good!

Re: Building a 4.5 in scale Foden Steam Truck in New England
Good shop practice typically suggests that any piece that requires close alignment should be roughed before finishing. Leaving an item oversized and then processing to eliminate or limit stresses that encourage movement when the item is altered (by machining or other functions) is always a good idea...

Re: Stuff I see on Youtube
Nothing wrong with posting links to youtube so long as they pertain the themes of the board. I took the liberty of embedding it for those who prefer to view them that way. Thanks for the post. An interesting way to broach a keyway. A lot of work considering one must dismantle the compound. Doubt it ...

Re: Railroad Warehouse 2.8.2 Mikado Logger Build
There's no reason for a bar to cut a taper unless the machine is not properly leveled, the bar is not firmly restrained, or the bar is not making contact at the proper point, **ONLY** the very tip of the tool (the cutting edge). That's assuming that the bar isn't extended unreasonably long. Even the...

Re: Railroad Warehouse 2.8.2 Mikado Logger Build
Thanks guys for the information. At least I know I have done my best to make this right. I would have thought a CNC Lathe would have gotten it right, apparently not. Because the slightest thing can cause a mismatch, a CNC isn't any better suited than a manual machine to accomplish the task, althoug...

Re: Railroad Warehouse 2.8.2 Mikado Logger Build
Matching tapers are incredibly difficult to make. Yep. When you do achieve the goal, it's more by luck than skill. Without the ability to create true surfaces (generally accomplished by grinding) it's nearly impossible to get a matching fit. Too many things interfere, including not being truly roun...

Re: End mill dish angle?
Although considering the time spent dealing with it, it's probably better to just toss the dull ones and buy new. But then, I'm a genetic tightwad. Depends. It's not always about money, and I'm no different than you are. I don't spend unnecessarily. Back to the point---it's very nice to have the ab...

Re: End mill dish angle?
45' (minutes) is adequate, assuming the end has been gashed and ground properly. It ensures that the flat area (formed by the gash) doesn't protrude (towards the material being machined) beyond the tips of the cutting edge, which would leave a slightly recessed center to the cut. Said another way, i...

Re: Tools for sale
As a moderator I am unaware of any restrictions on where one's first post may be placed. It isn't uncommon for a new reader to join the board strictly with the idea in mind of liquidating tools that are no longer needed or were inherited. Once gone, there would be no further offerings, unlike folks ...
