Re: Rail Bender

Posting images on this board is not difficult. In fact, it’s a piece of cake. Beyond that, they're most likely to be available for view long after those hosted on other sites are gone. How many of our readers have been burned by having uploaded images elsewhere only to have them lost due to change ...

Re: Rail Bender

Sorry guys for the way I posted the photos. I could not find a way to load them otherwise. Hopefully the moderator can correct them. No ill intent. Tom I didn't consider it an ill intent. Just that it requires unnecessary steps when you could have easily hosted the images on this board and not crea...

Re: Northern 4-8-4 Build 3/4”

I've got to investigate the white lead suggestion. Hmmm. It will be interesting to read about the results. I strongly suspect that due to EPA reg's, you're not going to be very successful in obtaining the material. There's been an outright war against lead in recent years. That said, please report ...

Re: Rail Bender

Hmmmm. I wonder. Why would one post a link that requires readers to "sign in" to view the link? Images hosted on the Chaski board eliminate that problem. I would have liked to view what was intended to be shown, but I'll have to be satisfied in not doing so as I'm not willing to sign in to...

Re: Rail Bender

Another way of explaining this is that the rail bender/roller is flexing the rail beyond its “yield” point, so that the rail will remain curved while in a relaxed state. Rail can be flexed, or forced into a curve, but unless it is deformed beyond its yield point, it will be like a spring, always re...

Re: Rail Bender

I would never, ever, believe that steel rail would, or even could, bend so easily. Terminology is an issue in this case. There's a distinct difference between "bending" and flexing. There's no way in hell one could overcome the forces that keep that rail straight (it does not bend----it f...

Re: Waste not, want not...

Not bad for what it is, and the expectation accuracy of such .. Exactly! Calipers are not to be relied upon for critical measurements. Those who do so are likely to experience fits that don't---and wonder why it is that they struggle when close tolerance work is in demand. Plain and simple. One can...

Re: My first engine, finished!

just a scale touch for the most part. The copper wire is to hold it in place in case the crazy glue fails at temperature. Thanks! Much as I suspected. The scale touch-----what a difference that makes in a model, taking it closer to the prototype in appearance. Very well done. Even patina seems to m...

Yep! I do, too!
I'm curious about the manifold shown in the first photo. Has a rather unusual appearance. Possibly a fabric overwrapped with copper wire?

Thanks to the 458, they are no longer an issue. :-)

Re: Brake Make

Pretty work! Material looks to be 316 stainless. Do you have any idea of the alloy? Non-magnetic, I suspect.

Dick_Morris wrote: Thu Mar 07, 2024 7:38 am Could part of the reason that steam seems to be more popular in the U.K. than the U.S. be that they retained steam on their railroads longer there and the die-off of those who lived with steam is delayed by a few years compared to the U.S?
That's in lock-step with my thoughts.
