Re: Historic 1" live steam 1970's southern MN

It's too bad that that track is so far away! Long ago, and far far away, we used to have a Manager, Alan Firman, who lived in England and flew back and forth to shift work with us. He had an observation, it went... "In England, we think of 500 miles as a long ways away, In the USA, they think ...

WEW: I have your wheels crated, And I have your check, but the check has your PO box and your physical address, I don't know which to send the crates to. I tried multiple times to get back into the PMs on the board here hoping that you left shipping instructions there, but Chaski won't let me open a...

Re: MEG steam Wendy Reconstuction

Only-est thing about them socket head screws is if you end up with grade 8, and snap one of them off, it can be difficult digging out the remains. Of course the answer is... don't snap one of them off.

Re: MEG steam Wendy Reconstuction

Here is an interesting article I found a while back. I searched but I do not have a copy. But perhaps if you can track down a copy of...May/June 2008 Live Steam and Outdoor Railroading, the article name is "The Big Little Narrow Gauge Engines of Texas by Bill Laird". It is about four diffe...

Re: Hydraulic control

I wiil pm you a sketch of how to modify a spool piece in a specific valve. It is a technique designed by two fellows other than me. Works Perfect. Maybe Jack from ALS can chime in on how well it works for him. It will be about a week before I send it, I am off at a train meet away from home right no...

Re: MEG steam Wendy Reconstuction

While you are mentally putting this together and getting ready to cut the "rubber", contemplate the three point suspension and how it is going to do. How much sway it might leave. Jim Sabin told me how peculiar it looked "Bobbing and Weaving" down the track. After he told me that...

Re: MEG steam Wendy Reconstuction

I am not a machinist, just at a hobby level.
Help me out here.
By "roughing", you mean to make the piece close to dimension in bites, perhaps using a "roughing" end mill before the final cuts?
Then switching tooling for the final passes?

Re: MEG steam Wendy Reconstuction

Mike: You got that right about the slide blocks. I have fought and fought those guys, and still they are garbage. One side is so loosey goosey and the other is somehow tapered so that it is tight at the top loose at the bottom.... after countless remakes!!! Now I am going to mill new ones out of bil...
