Re: Mill spindle mt#3 - what’s my options ?
pete writes: Correct, those collets don't have a tang at all. I'm not all that sure the collets themselves are long enough for those wedges to work, They are not. I use them on my Frankenmill, which has slots. Adding a hole for a drawbar would have required a gun drill and a larger lathe than I have...

Re: How precise are measuring instruments?
thunderskunk writes: Bias is accuracy. Linearity is uncertainty of that bias. (Non)linearity is not uncertainty. Like bias it is a systematic error which can, at least in theory, be measured and accounted for. Better to say that precision is uncertainty. BTW ISO now deprecates the use of the word &q...

Re: bearings for electric motor?
Do I need special insulated bearings for a 5 hp, 240 volt AC motor that's used intermittently on an air compressor? No. There is nothing in a properly-functioning squirrel-cage motor that would create an electrical path through the bearings. Not in this case but harmonics from a VFD can cause shaft...

Re: Mill spindle mt#3 - what’s my options ?
My mill has an MT3 taper and I just use MT3 collets to hold tools. I have a large Jacobs chuck with an MT3 shank and also several smaller chucks that can be held in collets.

You do not need insulated bearings for that application.

But it doesn't have to be nearly that pretty (otherwise mine wouldn't work).
Re: way oil
I also use bar & chain oil on my Logan lathe and on my Avey/Burgmaster frankenmill (except on the ways for the knee: there I use spray lithium grease).

Re: Gaskets for small surfaces
Use a very thin, stiff gasket material such as printer paper. Leave a lot of overhang on the outside and trim it off after assembly.

Re: Smokeless no smell cutting oil?
A "misting" system I've read about but haven't tried has nozzles designed to prevent the formation of droplets fine enough to float around in the air. Then there's the idea of using compressed air alone. I've also read of the use of chilled compressed air but that seems too complex. I've u...

Re: Flat belts
I sometimes use it (outside); blast it with a spray gun as a degreaser. Follow with compressed air, before the gasoline fully evaporates, works for heavy grime deposits on tractor parts and such. That's just about the most dangerous way to use gasoline as a solvent that I can think of. I sometimes ...

Re: LED shop lights?
I bought a case of LED tubes and a supply of sockets from 1000bulbs.com and made my own fixtures a couple of years ago. I'm quite satisfied with them. Their 1800 lumen tubes are about $4.00 each.
