Re: Which Surface Plate?
Think about it, many people only consider what there shop needs are right now while buying metrology equipment. The issue with that is you can't add accuracy after the fact. Not economically anyway's as you've found out. If you want to blue and scrape a machine tools parts, or even accurately check ...

Re: DIY gear hobbers, anyone know of any?
An old thread to dredge up but, College Engineering Supply (CES) that you already seem to know about offer that original but updated "Jacobs" named gear hobber as a casting kit and drawings. There in the U.K. for anyone who doesn't know about them. To be honest though I think some selectiv...

Re: Another YT Machining Channel
I've been watching him for about 4-5 months I think. Really well videoed and edited, and some unusual topics when compared to most general machining.

Re: Home Shop Shaper Accuracy ?
You asked about accuracy? Well even the small shapers like the South Bends and most of the others like Atlas etc have a outboard table support that slides back and forth with the shapers table sideways movement. If your's doesn't have something like that yet? You better figure out a way to add one. ...

Re: The snake chip
I cut myself just enough times I then said no more with the fingers. It's a chip brush or a pair of needle nose pliers to pull the strings of swarf out from where it's causing a problem. Even better I get much fewer metal slivers in my hands. And haven't cut myself since. At least not pulling swarf ...

Damn, I didn't even know he was ill. Yes he will be missed here by all of us for sure. And many thanks for taking the time to let us know. My sincere condolences to you and your family. He and I were just talking about small shapers not too long ago.

FWIW I've got a matched pair of the Glacern 615's that were finished at there California location. However at this point in time I can't exactly verify Glacern are still processing the raw castings here in North America or not. I've hear a few things I'm not real impressed with about there business ...

Re: Estate Sale in Nebraska
I've learned to appreciate very much those old machinist and other books. There's a great deal of equipment and techniques they show that are just as worthwhile as the day they were written. Much of this has not been "lost". But it's not been remembered. The information is still out there ...

Hell no need to thank me at all Glenn, your work alway's demands praise. And I sure love looking at work where a highly skilled and knowledgeable craftsman who really cared about the end result decided he go the extra mile just because that's what would satisfy him. And very nice knurling set up in ...

Apology's Russ, I guess I need to pay far more attention to the actual post dates. But since most of what I posted wasn't here before, then maybe someone else will get some use out of it in the future. But as an addition, if anyone is at all familiar with the now passed away English Model Engineer m...
