Re: Making High Strength Bolts
Yes John Evans, I am just curious how strong of a bolt we can make. I know that single point threads are not as strong as rolled threads, and every consideration to doing a good job would have to be attended to. I would not make head studs, as who wants to have their own cheapness have them broke do...

Making High Strength Bolts
This is just winter curiosity, but I wonder if it is possible. Aftermarket head studs for my truck engine claim to be 220k psi, and 14mm bolts take 214 ft/lbs of torque to collapse the gasket and hold down the head. I am wondering if any of you have made bolts to equal this kind of strength.. A blac...

Re: Sometimes is smart to change approach
I am far from being an expert tool grinder, but I have had great success with tool life cutting hard material by grinding a chip breaker in a quality HSS too with a diamond point in my dremel. This will leave quite aggressive rake at the cutting edge, and a small radius for the chip to work through....

Re: my 3 jaw chuck..
I bought the chuck listed below. I bought a 10" plain back adjustable 3 jaw chuck. I made a backing plate for it. The down side of it is that it is heavy... and takes about 2 inches more of my bed than any other chuck I have. The chuck is limited to 1100 rpm, which is not a problem for me, as I...

Re: I bought an adjustable 3 Jaw chuck
No Harold, I do not have soft jaws, yes I guess that is the next one. I have made the copper jaw covers to protect my work, and fitted them to the 4 jaw chucks.. I do not have anything I can bore.

I bought an adjustable 3 Jaw chuck
http://turnochucks.com/as-type.html I bought a 10 " one of these chucks. My lathe has a threaded spindle, so I needed to make a backing plate. I made a hub and had a pressure welder buddy weld a piece of 1" plate to it. I turned it to to fit, and drilled the mounting holes on the mill by p...

Re: grizzly gunsmith lathe tail stock won't lock tight.
John Evans: We tried it at a few different positions, and worked best at just before the apex, which is where physics would say the rotation of the cam would produce the most force. We made another anchor block out of a piece of 1" plate, which fit much better but made no difference. We tried th...

Re: grizzly gunsmith lathe tail stock won't lock tight.
We have cleaned everything with both brake clean and acetone.. If this is pilot error, I have no idea what it might be.

Re: grizzly gunsmith lathe tail stock won't lock tight.
Well, the lower casting came... We assembled it, cleaned the bottom of it with brake clean, cleaned the ways with brake clean, cleaned the anchor block and the underside of the ways with brake clean. We adjusted the position of the cam so that it locks at the very top of the stroke. This one will lo...

Re: grizzly gunsmith lathe tail stock won't lock tight.
Pete: It turns out that they are sending the lower casting for the tailstock, not a complete one. Yes, that is a lot of money here in Canada for a lathe that is junk when it arrives. No doubt he bought that lathe because it had the "gunsmith" status. They ordered one from China, and god kn...

Re: grizzly gunsmith lathe tail stock won't lock tight.
He told the Grizzly customer service people that the lathe was not safe because of this problem.. This is what secured the new tailstock.

Grizzly said they will send him a new tail stock, no questions asked.
