My file is a different brand than my divider...They do not work together, they must be a different taper or something..Torch wrote:Broach and a press?
Rotary broach?
Lathe bit, some way to index/lock the spindle and a lot of patience?
I suppose, for the minimum amount of gear: a file.

How does a guy cut an internal spline with the minimum of gear? I could forge one, but I can't imagine how to cut one.stevec wrote:Ya, well done Allen! Next challenge..internal spline..then blind internal spline.

This is great for the library, plus it gives me values for the scrap I harvest.

Micheal: Thanks for the insight, and for the link. I run across Youngs Modulus in my trade, which is industrial ultrasonics, it is part of the equation to calculate sound velocity in a metal. I am fairly sure that most of the scrap I recover is 1018 or close to it, I would love a good supply of bras...

Gentlemen, I would like to see the experts write a short list of what alloys are useful in what applications. I often work with scrap, but when I need to buy something I would like to know what is the "right stuff".
Thanks
Allen

Re: Shaft repair
Thanks for all the good advice.. I was able to get an internal spline for it to fit to. I built up the spline and re cut the center to get it in the right place, as center had moved .015 in the welding process. I turned it to size. I built an extention for my mill table, and I built a structure unde...

Re: Everyone's Favorite Topic: China
I imported a lathe from India, my pockets were not deep enough in 2000 to buy a lathe as big as I wanted. It is 16x48, and with a 4 jaw and a 3 jaw and a taper attachment and a cooling system it was $2900. It is not to compare with a top line lathe, but it is very good for the price, and the manufac...

Got Grizzly's New Catalogue
They have shortened their line considerably in terms of milling machines and lathes. They now have an expanded line of South Bend machines. Both of the horizontal/vertical mills are gone. I am sure this reflects the market, but I did enjoy the previous selection. I always hate to see a bunch of prod...

Re: Shaft repair
You don't elaborate on the functional location of the shaft in question. I assume that it is the shaft that allows the engine in an older tractor to be positioned forward in the frame for more pulling power with less tendancy to tip over backward.. I also assume that the shaft is solid as it is roo...

Re: Shaft repair
Yes, I could do that. I would have to build an extension for my mill as it is 39" and the shaft is 71". What would you build it up with?

Shaft repair
gentlemen: I have been brought the task of repairing a front drive shaft for an old tractor. the spline stripped because a previous a owner welded a broken pinion, and of course it was not straight. This shaft is 71 inches long. It looks like the remaining spline is long enough if the shaft were lon...
