Gear Repair.
Good Evening: I crashed my lathe, and took 2 teeth off a gear in the gear train for the Norton Gear Box. this gear is about 2-9/16" OD, and diameter at the depth of the teeth is about 2-5/16". It seems that my lathe manufacturer is not too interested in making me a gear. This lathe is out ...

Re: Adjusting Gibs.
Thanks for the tips. I will try to diagnose the cause with the Indicator. Possibly move the carriage manually, under power feed or with the half nut to see if the point of application of the moving force has an impact. So far I have limited myself to observe and complain without taking the time to ...

Adjusting Gibs.
Could one of you guys who made a living running manual machines, please give a good explanation of your preferred technique for gib adjustment? I want to do this on my mill and my lathe, and of course I want them as good as I can do. Thanks.

Re: I bought an adjustable 3 Jaw chuck
I have had my chuck apart, there was a small chip made it into the works, and I could feel it as I tightened the scroll plate, I wanted to have a look inside, and after paying for it I was eager to keep it working. Here is how it works. I cannot see how to attach or insert a drawing, so I will do it...

Re: Parting off in a Lathe
I started about the same time you did, and had similar experiences. I like T shaped high speed steel cutter, my quick change tool post takes one about 11/16" high, my secret trick is to grind some rake in the top of the the cutter, I use a small diamond point in a dremel, and so my grind has a ...

Re: Lathe LUBE advice needed
My Indian lathe had a spec for oil that was not available here, but I crossed the spec and it turned out to be hydraulic oil. 32 series.

Re: Should I make a bearing follower rest
The brass tipped follower is my friend now.. I found a solution.. I put a bit of sand paper under the brass tips, rough side out, gave it a bit of oil, , and it worked like a charm.

Re: Should I make a bearing follower rest
Do you mean that you have a follower? Yes, I have a follower, they are 5/8 rods with smaller brass tips, the rods have a flat side. the brass is very soft, and if the finish of the cut is not perfect it erodes.. I could modify it, I would have to use very small bearings. if I cut from the chuck tow...

Should I make a bearing follower rest
I have been doing some long work, and I think I would prefer a follower with bearings for the simple fact that the bearings are not consumed like the brass is, I am relatively new to using these, and the opinions of the pro's would appreciated. my lathe is 48" center to center, and I have been ...
