One has to question how companies can make claims that their products can last 30, 40, 50 years..... when the product has only been out on the market for 3 years. Make you go hmmmmmm....

Re: Table tram
Harold, I can speak from personal experience. Buddy of mine rebuilt a Ford tractor engine, without using a torque wrench. Assembled the whole engine and brought it to me because he couldn't get it running. Thought the cam was out and asked me to check everything out. I could barely spin the engine o...

Re: Table tram
Harold, Overtorquing the main bearing bolts will distort the main bearing caps, thus changing bearing clearances. Engine manufacturers always recommend replacing maincap bolts as well as head bolts as they are designed to stretch. In higher HP builds it is recommended that studs replace stretch bolt...

Re: Adjustable versus sized reamers.
I don't like 6 blade or expansion reamers either, but I use them frequently enough. Try welding a frame or assembly together and then have your customer tell you they want a little more clearance on the pins, but your now welded frame doesn't fit on the machine anymore....they have saved my butt man...

Re: How can this be?
My first question is what your using for a level? Only a good machinist level is going to be accurate enough to determine twist..... a thousands twist measured at the ways will be compounded the further your centerline is from the ways. The larger the swing of a lathe , the more critical leveling is...

Re: Advise for home built "big boy" CNC mills?
Where is "around here"? Yes not having 3 phase is going to limit what you can do, but 50 A is still substantial and plenty of power for a decent size phase converter. I would still suggest finding an existing machine and upgrading the controls if need be. The knee mill I have for example h...

Re: Advise for home built "big boy" CNC mills?
I have to ask why do you feel you need such a high RPM spindle? You want to move from a 3/4 HP , 800 -1200 rpm manual mill up to a 18000 RPM machine with 5X the HP......are you doing production work that would warrant this, or 3d work running small endmills that would warrant this? Do you have so mu...

Re: Have you seen the new Fireball vise
If your going to compare vises to a product your coming out with, at least keep the playing field fair. Granted the vises were supposedly donated by viewers, and he was trying to show the weak points of each vise but ...... What about a cost comparison with an actual dollar value???? You get what yo...

C14X -- You have not indicated where in NY you live....but it does make a difference as to what you can and can't do. I'm situated on Long Island and you can't do anything here without someone breathing down your neck or a nosy neighbor spoiling your fun. How close are you to your neighbor, how secl...

Re: Suggestions for laying out a wheel pattern
I don't think the University of Washington is going to get involved in printing live steam parts. I also don't have the time to build or room to stuff another machine in my shop big enough to print out 1/4 scale parts for casting. I have considered having a company print out the sand molds and cast ...
