Re: Consequences due to lack of penetration because of inexperience welders.

Speaking of Fukushima, New Orleans , New York city & many other places for that matter, why in the world would you place a backup generator, or pumping station in a place that can flood, rendering it useless when it is needed???? For that matter why would you live behind a wall of dirt when you ...

Re: How to Make a Patient Lift Roll up to Low Machines?

Add a platform to the base of Hoyer lift over the large wheels and place as much weight on it, steel plate , cinder blocks , what have you, that at least equals the heaviest rotary table , vise etc that you will be picking up. Unbolt/cut off the upright with lift cylinder and boom and spin it around...

Re: Consequences due to lack of penetration because of inexperience welders.

Years ago I good friend of mine who had 45 years in the welding business told me about a supermarket being built nearby. The GC called him to come to the jobsite as they were having a problem with the welds 'pinging" as the store front was going up. He discovered that the company hired to do th...

Re: Looking for 4032

Contact McMaster Carr. They no longer list 4032 in their catalogue, but that doesn't mean they don't have it or can't get it for you. I have bought items through them that were not listed. Tell them what you need and they will source it for you. You may have to buy a 12" length or a minimum but...

Re: Newbie - Buying first metal lathe

Never mind the pedestal grinder being to short....I've decided to raise the majority of the machines in my shop by 4 to 6 inches. I'm 6'4" and I'm tired of being bent over the lathe or mill, and my back doesn't like it either. I thought about it the other day, the average male is about 5'10&quo...

Re: Newbie - Buying first metal lathe

At this point I only use insert style tooling on my lathes. The problem is there are so many different types of inserts depending on the material to be cut, how hard it is, etc. Mind you I do this for a living and factor the costs of inserts into the job. For the hobbyist it can get rather expensive...

Re: Woodinville Shops

Glenn, A little quick research on compressive strength of plastics indicates an acetal copolymer (glass filled preferred) or a polyamide-imide plastic such as Torlon would be a much better choice than HDPE which is rather low in the compression chart. Delrin (glass filled) would also be a good choic...

Re: Preparing Machines for Moving

Only problem with removing handles is the riggers may decide they want the bed on the mill, or the carriage on the lathe in a different position....without handles it makes it much more difficult. You are using a rigger? rather than someone with a flatbed or hook truck that says he moves equipment a...

Re: Vise Identification

Harold, Of the newer Bridgeport models.....Bridgeport made the Series 1, which is the standard 2 HP mill. They made the Series II which was the 4HP version with power feeds on all axis, a 40 taper spindle and a 58" long table. It has a much larger / taller base. The hand wheel for the x-axis is...

I have a vise identical to the one in the first post, but it has Bridgeport cast into it. My Series II Special Bridgeport has the half moon troughs in the table.

Re: Save my Lawn Tractor's Rockshaft Cylinder

Yes I could see John Deere doing this. Makes it a proprietary part ,that you can only get from them. Does the cylinder have an end cap that can be unscrewed, or pinned or is the cylinder completely welded? Is the rod threaded on the end or is it welded? You could try Bailey hydraulics for a cylinder...
