Re: TIG issues on aluminum. Arc wanders unless I use more amps (then it's too quick)
Lets start off with some basics. Welding light wall aluminum TIG you want the machine set to AC. One amp per thousands of material thickness, so 1/8" (.125) is 125 Amps. One thing you mentioned is the tungsten was "ground longitudinally" .....on AC TIG you want a ball on the tungsten,...

Re: Lathe size
Gra2472, Looking at your part holding for the journal boxes, I would advise that you limit to holding 2 parts at a time. The clamping forces from the vise will be on the 2 parts in the center, the outer 2 will have far less clamping force being applied on them, this is especially true if the casting...

Re: Does anyone sharpen endmills?
Quick internet search came up with Accusharp in Canada. Sure there are others. Over the years I acquired a KO Lee tool cutter grinder with all the attachments, a Weldon air grinding fixture, and many of the other assorted endmill grinding fixtures on the market. To date I have yet to sit down and re...

Re: Looking for some belt wisdom
Go to McMaster Carr and look up flat belts. They offer made to order, or you can buy by the foot.

Re: Arizona Gandy Dancers
I was amazed at how many places sell thermite, and how inexpensive it is.....being that it is only iron oxide and aluminum I guess that makes sense on the cost. Considering it burns at around 4000 degrees, what do you encase it with that won't melt, such as when they weld rail? or does the casing no...

Re: Arizona Gandy Dancers
You could use Tannerite to perform explosive testing of the weld joints.

Bill,
I have seen thermite welding done on the LIRR , amazing process, and fast. I think Glenn might have a problem getting his hands on any though.

Re: Clausing 6300 series Turret
Harold, That would make sense, as the instruction manual ( a photocopy that is barely legible), does state that the turret was supplied with the holes rough bored at 7/8" diameter , to be finished bored to 1". So now I have a turret with the holes bored to 1" and a new set of wedges t...

Re: Arizona Gandy Dancers
What size rail are you laying 12lb? and what alloy steel is the rail? I can't imagine a 100 amp Mig welding 12lb rail ( it may look like it is welded but in actuality you have a cold joint that will eventually fail. 100 amps is good for 3/16 sheet metal, maybe 1/4" if you are pushing it. You ar...

Clausing 6300 series Turret
I have a 6 position turret from a Clausing 6300 series lathe that came with a lot of tools I purchased. The owner apparently was rebuilding it and was making new "wedges" that lock the holders in the turret. He never finished them, as the concave pocket was never milled, but what I am ques...

Now I know how Jack Bodenmann gets so much done during the day on all his projects.
