Need Grizzly/Jet/Frejoth cross feed gear suggestions?

Jet 1024P Grizzly G9249 12 x 37 Lantiane Frejoth LAM350 The brass cross feed gear on these lathes seems to be a total piece of underengineered garbage and my searches find numerous threads of failed parts, but no new and improved gear which won't fail with normal careful operation. Anyone have any s...

Re: Convert air cooled to liquid cooled?

FWIW, why remove the fins? The engineers went some effort to put them where the cooling fluid flow would be most efficient. Water is just a more viscous cooling fluid. Watch how the air is pumped over the fins and arrange the water flow to duplicate it. The most difficult to arrange is sealing aroun...

Re: The Engine World, and their Records. GREAT READ..

FWIW, a friend's son just earned a PhD with his thesis on conversion of large marine powerplants to LNG. He says it's the next big thing, because a big upside is the cleaner fuel means longer engine and fuel system life. Bunker fuel is nasty stuff.

Re: Camshaft Steel

Any thoughts about using cast iron, as most OEM flat tappet cams? IIRC, billets of Durabar/Versabar are readily available. Just Parkerize and they're ready to go.

Beautiful work is it's own reward. For nearly forty years I've been collecting wood, hardware, plans and ideas for making a wood machinist's chest. There is still hope it will still get done. However, it'll be made for the pleasure of the process, not function. Some the hardware kits referenced abov...

One hour per hole is a bit much. Something is so wrong with technique there, I wouldn't even know where to start without much more details. However, I agree, using a mill for casual holes when a drill press is available is not best practice. Thirdly, I'm always able to find used single and three ph...

Hi, Bill,

Thanks for the info and enjoy your dinner!

MSC says the #2MT drill bits are available from 3/8" to 1", which covers most of the fabrication and blacksmithing range.

A nice 1/2" chuck came with it, but I've got a couple of Delta 220s for the smaller stuff.

Hi, Russ,

Thanks for the offer. I'm looking at an old three-horsepower 1725 RPM motor and as soon as I decide on what to use, then I'll know bore diameter.

Given a four-step driven pulley, what low-to-high RPM ranges would be best for #2MT bit range?

Rescue of an Avey drill press with a Plymouth transmission

Even though I didn't need it, this hundred-year-old Avey was just too well-made to see it go for scrap. The three-speed Mopar transmission addition is interesting, but will have to go. It does give twelve speeds forward and four in reverse. http://lh6.ggpht.com/_hjClShMv-nQ/SvzUWuevrhI/AAAAAAAACW0/e...
