A quick search, both the 30206 & 30207 P5 bearings are readily available. Don't need to be NTN,..... Timken, SKF, etc will all do the same.....just stay away from the made in China stuff....they don't adhear to the same standards.

Re: Shop layout
I personally prefer the graph paper method, much easier to move things around. Inevitably your shop will be too small, you'll have to many machines, the work you try to fit on the mill will require you to nudge the machine over a foot to the left.......and then 45 degrees to the right..... Think abo...

Re: Chucks 3 jaw. Which one?
FYI --- Buck manual scroll chucks are made in China for them and have been for quite some time.....yes better quality, but your paying a lot more for the
Buck name. Gator makes a decent chuck, as does Bison.

Re: Way Protection
The shop next door had a Leblond with a L1 taper which can be a PITA to swap . They took a 4 x6 and notched it to fit on the ways, and cut a radius in the top to match the chuck diameter being used, at the mounted height. Slip the block under the chuck, release the chuck from the spindle and slide i...

Re: The price of steel
Bauxite is still mined in the U.S., but since 1981 the bauxite mined has not been used to produce aluminum, only other industrial purposes such as abrasives.

Re: The price of steel
Correct, we do buy steel from other countries because it's cheaper, and we did impose import tarrifs, but much of the steel used in the U.S. , especially that used by the Military or Government has to be DFARS compliant. In simple terms this means it has to be produced in the U.S. or by one of our A...

Re: The price of steel
Until we as a country start mining the raw materials on our own soil again, the prices will remain up. We import much of the ore needed for steel and aluminum production. Shipping costs have also gone through the roof, which is partially to blame for the steel increases. Prices have started to drop,...

Re: 1” USRA Light Mikado
If I remember correctly I had my 1.6” SP 0-6-0 drivers quoted at $12,000 when I sent in just the driver files. When I sent them the completed mold files it was $900. I also investigated having drivers cast, but I was going to supply printed cores ( 3 different ones). Granted they are 16" diame...

Re: 1” USRA Light Mikado
I would supply only the CAD model of the cylinders. They would have had to do the rest. Even at half the cost it would have been more than I would have gone for.
I've decided to build my cylinders from steel and sleeve them....much more economical for me.

Re: 1” USRA Light Mikado
I investigated having the cylinders printed from sand and the casting poured for my 3" Berkshire project, sticker shock would be an understatment. I was quoted $16-20,000 for one casting.

Re: A little project for Harold.
I also looked into getting a cylinder block for a 3" scale loco sand cast, 1 pc, $15,000 range.
