As I posted on the link that Dave pointed to: Die carts were available in a mechanical version which were a little smaller and used a hand crank similar to that on a boat trailer. Very inexpensive and work quite well if you can track one down.

Although a low Ra can produce high reflectivity, high reflectivity does not necessarily indicate a low Ra.

Re: Monarch

My Maximat has a .002 feed as the lowest feed and I don't remember how low the EE10s go. . Jose, Don't forget that the 10EE is VERY ridgid and has pre-loaded very high precision spindle bearings. I don't believe your Maximat does, so the feed rate difference is really irrelevant. Edit: Not claiming...

Re: heavier lathe

[quote="thomas harris"] Just curious now, as the living room is the only space large enough for such an animal. Wouldn't the wife love that. [quote] I recently acuired a second surface grinder from a friend. He bought a house and the grinder was in one of the bedrooms! Apparently n...

I've got one that uses a reversing winch and cable to raise and lower it rather than hydraulic. Pretty clever really, turn the crank one way and it raises, turn it the other and it lowers. No pawls or reversing levers to flip! Nice and simple!

I've got a .2 to 1" inside mic similar to the one Dave posted. I believe it was around $40.00 and the darn thing is deadly accurate  It always agrees with my Mitutoyo digital mic and .0001" bore gage set with gage blocks!! Every time I use it, it leaves me scratching my head ...

Dave, Thanks for opening the R&D Lab again and the "hands on" explanation. Definitely won't work on the grinder as the table changes direction via an adjustable mechanical stop and a microswitch, so if it does not reverse immediately upon tripping the switch parts are going to break! I...

Re: How to make an accurate ring gauge in the home shop

I'm guessing the best way to make such a gauge would be to bore to near the 1 inch size (using, say, telescoping gauges), then to make a lap from brass or copper and lap the gauge to a very nice finish. Since I can't measure inside diameters accurately with any assurance like I can outside diameter...

Not to mention taper, barrel, or bellmouthing when lapping as you described.

Re: What would you do?

JB, I would get a Variable Frequency Drive. I have changed over my lathe, and a drill press, and have another one for the mill. I love being able to high speed spot drill then adjust for pilot, then tap drills, and then power tap. All the time getting the right rpm, without a belt change. Dave Dave...

Also looks like a floating head, self aligning knurling tool on that drawing!
