I know a rail brake works well. But please do not bring equipment that have a rail braking system to the Ridge Live Steamers track.
Thanks

Re: Oxy-acetylene welding steel boiler?
NO
TIG the root and stick weld the rest.
If you do not know how to weld and know how to determine that it is a good weld, a boiler is not the place to learn.

Cylindrical Grinding
Hi
I just purchased a Dumore tool post grinder. I was wondering the direction of the lathe spindle. I will be grinding axles and pins.
Thanks

Re: CNW J class Mikado
I have started to draw the axles up. Like most of the other parts of the locomotive there are scaled down from original drawings.

Re: Crank Pin Material
My pins have a shoulder turned on them before they are pressed in, the actual bearing surface is the chrome plate. I am also using lead free nickel babbitt. Ive been running that setup for 3 years now and have not had to adjust any of the take up wedges in that time. I need to bring her home for so...

Re: 1/8 Scale USRA Freight Car Parts
Here are the bronze parts.
They are $22.50ea. plus shipping. 4 Push Pole Pockets are $90.00. They are 1.5 Scale and look great.

Oversize For Grinding Finish size
Hi All
I will be hardening my 4140 crank pins. I will machine the journal 0.003" over size so I can grind it to final size. Should I do the same with the press fit section? Or will it stay on size during heat treat?
Thanks

Re: Crank Pin Material
I will be using high lead 936 bearing bronze. I have not decided if I will use oil or grease for lubrication. Tim Mechanical Properties 4140 is better in strength and hardness due to its alloying elements. However, 1045 offers better weldability and machinability, due to its lower hardness. Heat Tre...

Crank Pin Material
Hi All
What is better for crank pins on a 1/8 scale locomotive?
1045 or 4140? I plan on having them hardened and grinding the bearing surface to size.
Thanks

Re: Prototype Poppet Valve Throttle
I have some many different projects on the Mikado I am going to have to wait on some. Coal pusher, draw, cast and machine. Power reserve, cast and machine. Stoker engine, machine. This locomotive has the stoker engine in the tender. Cross compound pump, rebuild. Feed water heater, design, draw, cast...

Prototype Poppet Valve Throttle
Hi All
Looking at the discussion on the ball valve throttle got me thinking. Has anyone built a prototype double seat balanced throttle valve? I have prints and was just wondering.
Thanks
