Re: Where to buy raw materials
We used to have a guy here in northern NJ who brokered tools -- I think his name was Dave Sobel. I never bought anything from him, although I went to his place to find out about getting some ER 25 collets, when the young fellow who was there quoted me a higher price than Schaublin was asking for new...

Anyway, whereabouts is your " local used machinery dealer " ? (No idea why the punctuation is going where it does. )

Re: Where to buy raw materials
Used to be a scrap yard here in north-central NJ that let the general public in to root around, on Saturday mornings. I scored some nice stuff there, including an 18" x 18" cast iron lapping plate. Cost me about $8 as I recall. Not much use for lapping any more, but I used it as the base f...

Re: Rockwell 1 x 42 Grinder - Useful?
You can get a 1" x 30" belt SANDER (probably not worthy of the name "grinder") from Horror Fright for $45 -- or on sale, $30. Underpowered and cheesy, but better than nothing. Too bad they don't make washing machines the way they used to, with a two-speed 1/3 hp electric motor se...

I've heard that too. Never tried it, but I'll try to remember it, next time I pick up a splinter.

Re: Cartridge question
Thanks... I'll look into the Eureka source.
There used to be a guy in Vermont who made custom (usually antique) cartridges, but I haven't seen him in years. He wasn't young then, so he may not be doing it any more.

Cartridge question
This may not be appropriate to this forum, but it does have to do (sorta) with gunsmithing and metal fabrication... Has anyone here made 11.15 x 58mm R cartridges for the Austrian Werndl rifle ? If so, how? (I.e. what cartridge did you start with? -- I don't feel like turning them out from bar stock...

Re: Can Capped Jugs of Acid Cause Rust?
I don't understand how it manages to do it, but it even gets through the plastic jugs they sell it in. I had some under my sink for a couple of months (I'm not the best housekeeper) and when I opened the cabinet (A) there was a smell of HCl and (B) the tin cabinet was rusted. I won't even keep it in...

Cannonballs
Actually, shells. The question came up on another forum I follow: How did they cast hollow spherical cannon shells, back in the 1700-1800s ? Obviously they'd use a regular sand mould, but how'd they get the hollow ? One poster said they used a wooden peg wrapped in string that then was coated in cla...
