Re: Logan 11" Lathe
They are good lathes. I have a 11" pre WW2 model and have done quite a bit of machining on it. Only issue I am aware of with the Logan lathes is a tendency to break teeth off the gears in the headstock. Several in my lathe have been repaired. I am about to replace the spindle bearings in mine a...

Re: Knockoff Bearings
Price always plays a factor into any purchase, but doesn't dictate it. If price were the only concern, any manufacturers bearings would do, but I always look for OEM's with a good reputation, Timken SKF, NTN, Fafner etc. That goes for anything I purchase, machine tools , cutting tools, accessories, ...

Re: Knockoff Bearings
The Amazon seller is Discount Bearings. I am not the only person who has complained about this seller....a found several other people in the reviews who purchased from them , complaining about fake bearings.

Re: Knockoff Bearings
Glenn W... What made me question whether they were knockoffs was the box. What confirmed my suspicion was the "R" that is supposed to follow the word TIMKEN on the race. With the naked eye it looks like a dot but on a real TIMKEN the "R" is visible if looked at through a loupe. O...

Knockoff Bearings
I thought I might spread a word of caution about ball/roller/needle bearings, based on my recent experience. When I need bearings the first places I look before calling a distributor is Ebay and Amazon. I don't like to spend more than I have to if a bargain can be found, but I only buy good quality,...

Re: MIG or TIG for car bodywork restoration?
I have used both TIG and MIG for body work. I prefer MIG on large panels because it is faster, which in turn usually ( not always) means that less heat is introduced into your work. These heat zones, when cooling, create shrinkage and distortion , less heat ...less shrinkage. With either process you...

Re: Machining 300M and actually breaking chips?
Unfortunately you are correct....you need more HP on your lathe. You need to be pretty aggressive with 4340. it does not cut well at slow speeds. Higher speeds and feeds are needed. Strings means your not moving fast enough. What diameter material are you starting out with?

John Hasler,
I agree DOM tube would be fine to use. I was referring to "pipe" or welded rings.
