Re: Trepanning

I generally use hole saws when dealing with larger diameter holes. I've had several instances where I used a 6" hole saw in 1" thk 316 stainless plate. Takes a while and gets a little messy. Run the spindle as slow as it will go, lots of coolant, alternate that with compressed air to continually cle...

Re: R-8 Collets

To answer the original question about collets coming in 1/32 increments......one reason for having them is that carbide end mills come with straight shanks , if you want a 7/32 or 17/32 carbide end mill the shanks is also going to be 7/32 or 17/32 accordingly.

Re: Self-Tightening Albrecht Chuck

I have a 1/2" Albrecht chuck about 20 years old......not long after I got it I was using a 3/4" drill with a half inch shank, the drill got jammed momentarily while going through a plate I was drilling. When I tried to remove the drill it was jammed and I had to use channel locks to open it. It neve...

Re: Aluminum flat bar forming

Mr. Ron, What alloy aluminum are you planning on rolling? 6061-T6 which is the most common alloy does not like to bend too easily....if you try to put too much of a bend in it , it will crack. Better alloy for tight radius would be 6063. You could also anneal the 6061-t6 and then roll or bend it. In...

Re: Milling Machinist Vise

A word of advise from my own experience, buy an original KURT vise....not the competitors Chinese knock off......I was given a knock off and cranked down on the handle (without a cheater bar) and snapped the vise in half.....

Re: THE BIG HUDSON

Hi Jim, How accurate am I looking to go? I'm not looking to make my head hurt, although I think I will have to get my head checked once I start this project. Being that I am planning on building only one loco I will fabricate the parts, but I would like to make at least the "visible" parts as close ...

Re: THE BIG HUDSON

Thank you for the feedback. So it looks like I would be building the Berkshire from plate and stock. That leads to the next question....will the drawings and prints from Real Trains have enough dimensions/ info to build without castings or will I need to locate original builders prints as I go? Than...

Re: THE BIG HUDSON

Does anyone know what happened to the patterns for the big Hudson? Any idea if anyone has patterns /castings for drivers, cylinders or any other parts that would be suitable for a 15" Berkshire? Been toying around with the idea of building a 15" Berkshire from Real Trains prints.....any thoughts?

Thanks for the info....I was aware that RR Warehouse was only selling by the section, although he does sell items individually on Ebay sometimes.

Re: 4 USRA Mikados

Hi Harry, This is my first post on this forum. I would first like to say nice work on your Mikado's. I have been following your progress and wanted to know where you got the trailing truck casting from? I bought the Railroad Supply kit from Hank Tadoro years ago but never received the trailing truck...
