Re: Rings Screw Up

Congratulations ! I confess to having indelicate thoughts when I reached the point in your story where you admitted poking the second piston past its point of no return. So glad to discover a surprise ending in your favour at the conclusion of the tale. A testament to perseverance, inquisitiveness a...

Re: Harbor Freight 20 ton press mods

A post to compliment you on the modifications to your H-press I also have a few remarks. The illustration in the second image appears to show: a single piece of channel positioned so that the channel's web section is horizontal and the channel's flange sections extend downward and each end of the ch...

Re: Polyurethane Air Hose Unreliable?

I understand that the OP is little interested in rubber hose, but for others who follow this far into the thread I will add my vote in favour specifically of Goodyear rubber air hose. My experience w/ poly is limited to the coiled extension hose. Never had trouble attributable to UV damage, despite ...

Re: Atlas 618 Lubrication

Incidently, in the parts section of the 1976 document, M6-818 and M6-828
bearings are indicated for the headstock. In other words, Atlas called for
SAE No 20 (ISO-VG 68) oil to be applied to these ball bearings in 1976.

Re: Atlas 618 Lubrication

A few remarks. It is increasingly common to find machine oils of different grades and for different applications repackaged into bottles for home shop enthusiasts. One US vendor offers four types of Mobil machine oils in 16 oz. quantities as a set selling for $30, just one of several options availab...

Looks like Hydra-Tool was purchased by CompuDyne in 1968 From CompuDyne's history CompuDyne Corporation was formed in Pennsylvania in 1952 to serve as a contractor for the U.S. Defense department through a subsidiary called CompuDyne Controls. In 1967, the firm started making acquisitions by buying ...

Thanks for the replies. Just to be clear, the post is about magnetic backs that are installed in place of the conventional lug back that dial indicators typically ship with. I first became aware of mag backs last year and took note of how convenient they were for use on ways. However, upon shopping ...

Magnetic Back for Dial Indicator

I have been surprised to discover that Teclock magnetic backs for dial indicators are as expensive as they are: mid-$40s to low $50s. I also see there are some no-name mag backs that sell for well under $10 (and that there appear to be a variety of configurations necessary to accomodate differences ...

Thank you for the very informative replies. Resinoid wheels are typically very close pored, and are a dark opaque color, often brown. It may be that the only wheels I use that seem to fit this description are the 3" and 14" abrasive wheels for cut-off tools ? Other wheels here are gray, wh...

Will the 'Ring' test adequately identify a stale resinoid wheel or
do the effects of aging not manifest in this manner?

Also, how does one determine whether a legacy wheel is vitrified or
resinoid.

Grinding Wheels: Shelf Life

While speaking to a local vendor, a representative mentioned in passing that grinding wheels have a shelf life. A figure of two years was mentioned. The reason give for this shelf life was that the bonding agents break down in time. This suggestion took me by surprise as I know of wheels that have b...
