Re: Making Boxcar Ends
My thoughts were that steel was the material to be used for making the box car ends. I hadn't considered aluminum. Which will it be? H First I had a typo: 6061-T6 not 5051-T6. I've done a lot of work with aluminum sheet, and just bending 6061-T6 in a hand break with too small an inside radius can c...

Re: Making Boxcar Ends
Instead of 5051-T6, use 3003-H14. It will form a whole lot easier and without any pre-heating.

Re: Nelson Reidel
hows your CNW 4-6-2 coming? Chassis runs on air. All boiler pieces are cut and prepped for welding, with the firebox complete and ready to install when its time comes. As a side trip, I've built a 10' Railroad Supply baggage car with 3 boat type seats and vacuum brakes. And, I just did a mock up of...

Re: Nelson Reidel
Hi Peter, Thanks for the link. The articles loaded (pretty much) but no images. His email listed on the site bounced as well. Brian I made a cross compound air compressor to his design. It ran great on air, steam not so good as of now. I have a couple of ideas to make changes to the steam passages....

Re: Nickel Plate 762
Hello My Friends Thank you RussN. Making things is almost always the process of making sub assemblies and then fitting them together. Little, and sometimes not so little puzzles. I just noticed Pete's question about the firing valve. I will make my own plug valve for this. I will make then tapered ...

Re: Nickel Plate 762
Hello My Friends Here are some snappies of the firing valve for Jim's Berk. This is a valve I made years ago. It features a tapered slot on the plug so it has a very usable range of opening in the lower settings. The valve is all bronze. Jack, any chance there is a sketch, drawing or photo of the p...

For tap drilling.. my thumb rule is OD - pitch Been getting me close enough for 50+ years One of the very first Rules of Thumb that I learned in the earliest days of my apprenticeship, and it works quite well. In the 26th edition of Machinery's Handbook, on page 1900 there is a formula for figuring...

Re: Trucks
Not trying to hijack this, but Curious if you are still working on your CNW locomotive Peter? Yep. Chassis is running on air and all the boiler plates are cut and prepped for welding. Firebox is welded and is waiting for the mud ring pieces to be welded. Got my tender trucks from Dave several years...
