Re: Did I buy a milling machine or a mistake?

Amazing that all of you have similar mills purchased by your father in the 1980's Making me feel old -> since I have one it these mills that I purchased in the early 1980's when I was in my early 20's. They are not bad mills, as long as you go slow and understand their limitations. I built my first ...

Re: tractor engine top end rebuild

Nyle is correct -> in had completely forgotten about that aspect (getting old and has been 40 years since ripped a gas turbine apart). Does the manufacturer list a nominal length -> beyond which you toss the stud? I seem to remember that Mitsubishi also used to specify a minimum diameter of the turn...

Re: tractor engine top end rebuild

The bottom of the sleeve will not leak because there is no pressure there, as opposed to the top. My BMW air cooled cycles had nothing between the cylinder and the crankcase except a nice finished surface. It is little more than an overgrown air cooled VW engine -> a tried and true design. Didn't De...

Re: tractor engine top end rebuild

I wondered about the history of head gaskets on this engine. Seems like a lot of stacking of components and one long bolt to secure them. If you are looking for a minimum of 350 PSI compression with heads, cylinders and bolts potentially going from 0C to maybe 100C+, the expansion and contraction o...

Re: tractor engine top end rebuild

ever put 3 or 4 hose clamps together? Question: the tool was made in the same country as the tractor? the ship problem was a lot of all you suggest. They even had one crack in two in drydock before ever hitting the water...that's when they finally acknowledged that they had a problem (duh......

Re: tractor engine top end rebuild

In decades past, I have used worn drive hose clamps as a ring compressor. Wrap shim stock around the assembly, when a couple of hose clamps, and you can get the job done, Wear in the top grooves is not unusual, considering that they take the brunt of the explosive load. WW2 liberty ships with welded...

Re: Why are these springs necessary

Spring rates are a function of the switch mechanism and minimum weight on an axle. Irrespective of what anyone suggests, you are going to have to $ few springs, install the appropriate mechanism on a turnout, find the LIGHTEST car at the track....and play with it. After you have done a few, you will...

I would look at the application and see what modern sealing methods apply......BEFORE I do any cutting.
