Even with a Kurt you need to tap the workpiece down against the parallels, but it is minimal.

I use a 10 oz Deadblow plastic hammer and just give it a light tap. Just so the parallels don't move if you touch them with your finger.

I believe you will find that Sandvik R390 milling inserts are proprietary. The dimensions will be slightly different that any "generic" insert such as an APKT.

Heat control on aluminum is a bit more critical than steel. It needs a bit more patience to get a puddle to form than steel does. It sounds like you are going from too much to not enough on the pedal when trying to get a puddle formed. It needs fine movements of the pedal to maintain a puddle. It ma...

I can't say that I've tapped anything with my knuckle, but I always approach a dial reading from the same direction, toward the surface to be cut.
