Your post is a bit confusing to me.
How did you determine that the distance between the holes was .9998"?

Re: Tailstock Mod
It was still wrapped in cardboard with the shipping paperwork on it. A foot long piece if 1" x 4" 4142.
I just looked, and Online metals wants $346.76 for an 18" piece.

Tailstock Mod
I finally got around to solving an uncommon problem yesterday with my lathe. I use a bed turret 95% of the time, but once in a great while I need to use the tailstock. The bed turret weighs 120 lbs and seriously awkward to lift on and off of the bed, so I would place the tailstock on the bed and the...

Re: Boring on the lathe
Glenn-- Would you start off with a small HSS lathe blank? Just tune up what is there. No real need for another tool bit. You can grind a square tool bit into a triangle shape if needed. Your tool holder may work with round HSS tool bits as well. I use a similar setup for grooving tools and just tun...

Re: Boring on the lathe
Try not to stick the boring bar out past the tool holder any farther than needed for rigidity.
Hanging it out as far as you have it can induce chatter.
Nice part!
