Re: turbulator on vert boiler worth it?

Crap shoot, since optimum depends on velocity of draft. I have used what looks like 1 twist per foot and been happy with results. You can always twist it more...but getting it untwisted is a bit of a headache. Suggest you cut twice as many as you need and start slow. Have a set that you can swap ou...

Re: turbulator on vert boiler worth it?

Baffle boosted avg pressure by 20 psi Was able to run whole track even our incline that all of our steamers struggle on and that was with an additional passenger.

Next up the flue inserts

For a vertical, just cut strips what will fit in flues and give them a barber pole twist then bend the end over so that they will not fall out.

KISS
that is the plan steel strip then cut a lil slit at the top so i can fold it into a T shape to hold it in place.

Hoping to have my 0-4-0 running by then as well(Wishful thinking). I just cut out a baffle and am going to give it a shot. Also goin...

Re: turbulator on vert boiler worth it?

I am sure the larger sized fire tubes are not helping the case. Ill do the plate at the top and then try turbulator inserts when i get the change.

Re: turbulator on vert boiler worth it?

Hi, your superheater coil is far too short to be really effective. A pancake style coil with about 1/8 th of an inch space between turns virtually covering all the tubes with about 3/8 inch space between it and theinside edge of the boiler barrel would do much more, and would act as a baffle somewh...

Re: turbulator on vert boiler worth it?

While turbulators may well help I reckon a better use of the heat lost would be to add a superheater. A simple pancake coil in the smokebox would catch a lot of heat and liven up the engine performance. The only downside would be that you MUST have a mechanical lubricator to ensure proper lubricati...

Re: Little engines 0-4-0 project

Happy to say the seam is now removed! I am touching up a few other seams as well on and will be rewelding.

The penetration on this seam was not good since it was a super tight fit and I did not do a V groove the first time. Lesson learned.
