Re: Increasing Friction

OP’s clamp reminds me of a Noga indicator clamp I have, which is a pretty efficient way to affix two cylinders using two forked, angled end caps and a central washer: https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221201/1a82a34108af42c217b11cc4aa556151.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221201/1df2fb7fafd2...

Re: Curved Cut Edge from Drill Sharpen Jig

According to Harold Hall #38, Tool and Cutter Sharpening, the point angle can affect the cutting edge, such that too pointed of a tip results in a convex edge as you’re seeing.

Re: Surface Grinding

You really don’t need full contact on the base, you need even overall flatness. The point is to avoid inducing distortion in the chuck body when it’s clamped down.

My grinder produces parts flat within a tenth, from a chuck milled on bottom.

Re: Surface Grinding

I milled the bottom of my magnetic chuck before grinding the top. After milling, it hinged appropriately on the surface plate and did not deflect when clamped on the grinder’s set pad. I could have taken a very light pass on the grinder but saw no benefit to come from that. Steve at Solid Rock did a...

I had the exact same experience. The first time using the Toolmaker, I realized the tedium of a manual grinder. I’m currently setting up a 6x18 Micromaster that has automatic longitudinal and cross feeds.

Less than full size mill suggestions

Is there a document or primer on the different versions of Bridgeports? I've seen "Series I", "Series II", "J head", "M head" and a few others. No doubt there are primers/overviews. Series 1 is the usual size; series 2 are larger/heavier. Original head was th...

Re: Surface Grinding

I hear what you’re saying. I think my chuck is also a 5x10, though I’ve primarily been using the machine with the other attachments as a tool grinder.

That looks like the later "TG-3" grinder, aka No. 24-150, -151, -152 (the one I have is from 1972), for which Rockwell specifies a 6x13" capacity. (7" transverse travel and 13.5" longitudinal travel).

Re: TIG issues on aluminum. Arc wanders unless I use more amps (then it's too quick)

Is the piece small? That makes things a lot harder. On 1/8” aluminum I’d be running 150 amps at least. The faster you get the puddle going the less heat you put into the piece overall.

anyone with a Ebay DRO have a few questions?

RodMI wrote:On the HS800-3 are the only advanced functions available the quick keys on the front panel? is SDM and ABS/INC available??
There’s a button for abs/inc, one for SDM, and one that opens a menu for the various features. They are the F buttons, and change depending on context.

Re: anyone with a Ebay DRO have a few questions?

I bought a 3-axis, HS800-3, and it’s been great so far. It was about as cheap as I could find, and I was curious how that would work out. My garage is not heated and that hasn’t been an issue yet.

Re: DRO Questions.

Sure sounds like the feed rate, a feature useful on mills.

Axis summing combines two axes, for example the z-axis and quill of a mill, where both represent movement in the same relative direction.
