Re: Drilling holes at an angle

Given that this is for a stair rail, I’m going jump to the conclusion that the flat stock is a vertical, and a number or 1/2” or 5/8” diameter dowels parallel to the stair tread nosings will pass through it (hence the 33 Desiree angle)… if so, a 1 1/16” dia hole drilled perpendicular will allow the ...

Now that’s a situation I could see warranting glued and screwed.

Re: sheetrock; glue and screws?

USG and all of the other gypbd manufacturers have very specific installation instructions available online for their products - much better than word of mouth. With that said, I’m quickly approaching my fourth decade in architecture/construction in the northeast US and my experience has been that, u...

Re: Cheap DROs: Any good?

A while back I built a Touch DRO kit and paired it with a used seven dollar android tablet (ebay) and two Shars scales (also ebay) for my little mill. It’s been fantastic - a real game changer. Maybe a little more of an investment than you’re looking at, but well worth considering if your budget can...

Record spindle diameters are about 9/32"... does that match your mystery object?

Re: where do you buy drops (locally) and what do you pay?

Metal Supermarket, Woburn MA. During Covid their drops room went from good to really great - organized, clean, and safe. I heard through the grapevine that a semi-retired machinist took it on for them and his/their efforts really show.

Cast Iron - Recommendations?

Hello. I'm an architect by day (and a grateful reader who learns a lot from the accumulated wisdom here at Chaski). We recently wrapped up a project that involved modifications to some cast iron stairwell guard railing posts. Back in the '40s they built them a lot shorter than building codes require...

Re: Delrin bushing

You might want to avoid PVC if these are going to spend their lives outside, as its surface degrades and gets brittle/looses its impact resistance with extended exposure to UV/sunlight.

If you go with a dissimilar metal, beware of galvanic action/degradation if these will see rain or snow.
