Re: Chuck Yeager: RIP
There's a saying in the Air Force, "There are old pilots and there are bold pilots but there are no bold old pilots". I think Chuck Yeager put the lie to that.

Re: 5x6 Bandsaw Blades
I get my blades from McMasters-Carr I have had good luck with the Starrett blades. Just remember that at least three teeth should be in the material when cutting other wise you will strip off teeth, don't ask me how I know  With 14 ga tubing getting 3 teeth into the cut when one gets close to ...

Re: REMOVING rivetts from NAME PLATES
Use grease on the face of the nameplate you don't want paint to stick on. A putty knife held to the edge of the nameplate will keep the grease off the part you want to paint. When the paint is dry, use a knife along the edge of the nameplate to separate the paint, then clean off the grease.

Re: Sometimes is smart to change approach
That's the lesson I've been trying to convey as long as I've been on this board. A properly configured and ground HSS toolbit will generally outperform carbide on light machines. I'll never understand why so many resist its use. I can buy an insert tool that will already have the proper shape. If I...

Have any of you used the CAM function of FreeCAD to see if it is functional or has major problems. Being new to CAD and CAM I have problems that I haven't been able to solve yet and don't know if it is a software problem or a soft head problem. I don't like being tied to a company that can make chan...

Re: Eyeglass worn with mask fog getter ridder of-er
Every time I put on my mask to snorkel I wipe an anti-fog liquid on each lens and rinse off the excess in the water where I will dive. Available at any dive shop and pretty cheap as it only takes less than a drop for each lens. Link for reference. https://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-Sports-Outdoors-...

Re: Help choosing a plasma cutter for my home shop.
I “had” a miller spectrum 3080 until it got stolen and I may say it was great with its ability to work 110 or 220 volt in 20, 30, 40, 50 amps that could cut up to 7/8”. But since then I got an inexpensive Chinese import for $550.00 and the ability to cut 1-1/4” these depths are all with a single pa...

Re: Best lube for wood planer gear train?
Wood planers are much quieter if the blades are sharp. As the edge gets worn they hammer into the wood instead of slicing.

Re: Lead screws
I'm not an experienced machinist so take this with a grain of salt. CNC machines need nearly zero backlash. To get this they replace the acme leadscrew with rolled ballscrews. These come it different diameters, lengths, and quality. Making one fit your machines may not be possible but it is somethin...

Re: Repowering SB 9" Lathe
Hf motor? Smooth motors make good surface finishes on lathes. Not sure hf motive power will qualify. My experience with them has included Bad centrifugal switches Bad caps Bad bearings Loose bearings on shafts and in housings Crappy uneven windings causing motors to 'cog' Run out on output shafts. ...

Re: 4-way toolpost build
If your friend is taking such deep cuts on that Atlas 618 that 10-24 socket head cap screws won't hold the cutter bit, I want to be there to watch. The bit should not extend far beyond the end of the holder for rigidity which then puts little strain on the screws securing it. It does need 2 screws, ...

Re: Need help finding Change gears - JET GH-1340
The gears in a truck transmission have to be steel and good quality to be quiet and transmit the required torque. The change gears on a lathe don't have that much torque stress on them so they don't need to be so strong. Find someone with a 3D printer and make them from PLA. They may not last as lon...
