Re: tractor engine top end rebuild

Very diesel; gasoline tractors are pretty much unknown here. I sent the injectors out for testing, one needed repair. I'll push some fuel through the pump and blow out the lines before reassembling the fuel system. I got sidetracked by some errands and the need to make an oil pressure switch adaptor...

Re: tractor engine top end rebuild

Lots of signs of bad work on the tractor; not to mention the terrible wear on all the linkages and steering parts due to a lack of simple lubrication. I had to replace every joint and bushing on the tractor, and there are a lot of them. Something obvious after the mistake has been made; to get the h...

Re: tractor engine top end rebuild

I haven't read the entire repair manual, but I didn't see anything about stud length; I torqued them all to spec successfully though. Providing they were not stretched beyond the yield point, they should be the same length as the day they were made; however, if one does break it will be visible. I d...

Re: tractor engine top end rebuild

The tractor is Italian; I don't know where the ring compressor tool was made, but the fasteners and screw are of Imperial measure. In any case, it did its job; I might never need it again, but it's in my toolbox just in case. I use copper grease on all the fasteners; except the exhaust nuts. My expe...

Re: tractor engine top end rebuild

I've used hose clamps, and even just my thumbs. In this case, I had no hose clamps big enough, nor any shim stock. Ok, I still have thumbs but I decided to splurge and buy a suitable tool. The ships; probably bad steel and bad welding combined. Pre ww2 steel was different stuff; it wasn't homogonous...

Re: tractor engine top end rebuild

I think arc welding was an American invention; I used to work on pre ww2 barges in Holland that were rivetted together. The guys had stories about how when the first welded hulls were made, no one trusted them. Skippers of the day were sure those newfangled boats would break apart. The pushrods are ...

Re: tractor engine top end rebuild

Riveted the ring compressor tool using welding rod butts; the only 1/8" material in my shop, and it sure is cheap. Here in Europe, rods of 3.2mm (aka 1/8") is a normal size between 2.5mm and 4mm. No one knows the logic of these things. Reassembly continues at a languid pace; it's nice to b...

Re: tractor engine top end rebuild

It's a first for me too; I did some air cooled motorcycles in the past, but never this sort of industrial diesel. I've only rebuilt a few motors, mostly when I was a car mechanic in the late 70's. Even then, we mostly installed used motors for customers who needed motors; they were much cheaper and ...

Re: tractor engine top end rebuild

This is disappointing; new ring compressor broke open, 2 rivets failed on the last piston!

I should send it back, but I want to get my job done so tomorrow I'll make a couple of tiny solid rivets and fix it.

tractor engine top end rebuild

My 39 year old Italian SAME tractor was running on 3 cylinders due to a blown head gasket. It ran so well that way, it makes me think I should take one or two cylinders out! Not really, but I never use the power the 250 ci engine has, I just need the weight and stability of the large tractor for my ...

Re: Ball Oilers

My mill has press fit zerk fittings (for oil). When I needed to replace a few, I made adaptors. To get oil through the zerk fittings, I had to adapt a grease gun for the job. The adaptor is just a little piece of mild steel rod I machined to fit. I'm sure you could do the same for a ball oiler. Ruhl...
