Re: $83 !?!?!?!?
We're allowed to burn brush and collected vegetation when fire risk is low.
Permit is available over the phone from the regional fire department.
I don't know if it's allowed to burn used timber on the pile; but no one told me it isn't.

Re: which Arbor Press to purchase?
A heavier press can do more jobs; straightening and bending for instance.
On the other hand, a lighter press is cheaper, quicker, and easier to use.
So it depends on the work you will want to do in future.

Re: Insert Question
Whatever you're looking at buying, google the number of the insert that comes with it. If you get a lot of results with competitive pricing, then you know you're looking at a common type. I get inserts in both 55 and 60 degrees for imperial or metric use. Threading with a factory made carbide insert...

Re: Pressing brass bushings
I've done it both ways. Sizing first is easier because you do the work on the lathe. But you need to get those measurements just right, and it's difficult to measure the bores accurately unless you have an expensive internal micrometer. Honing or boring after pressing is less prone to error on size,...

Re: How to use lathe back gears
In my village in Portugal, we have a fully functional wheat milling windmill. It was built quite late, in the 50's, rebuilt on the site of an older one. At that time fuel was expensive, there was no mains electricity here, and labor was still by man and beast. Until a few years ago, an old man looke...

Re: Resurface Motorcycle clutch Basket?
I faced this problem long ago, and solved it in a far more simple way. I just filed the surfaces flat with a wide mill file. I used the bottom of the wear grooves as index marks. When I was done they were still just visible but the surface felt smooth to the touch. The clutch action was good after I...

Re: How to cut NPT thread on manual lathe?
Maybe I should elaborate a little... I saw it done by a machinist in India, a man of some skill. I started by cutting the blank cone to published dimension, and taking note of the total movement of the cross slide wheel required to follow the taper. Then I practiced that a few times to get the feel ...

Re: How to cut NPT thread on manual lathe?
There is a program to find change gears; maybe it will help you find a combination that works. do a search for "GEARSVB6". It's free. You input your leadsrew pitch (inch or metric) and list your available change gears. Enter desired pitch (inch or metric) and it presents you a list of poss...

Re: Rotary table chuck mounting
I made an adaptor to mimic my threaded lathe spindle, so I can use all my lathe chucks. I started by cutting a small indexing groove into the rotary table top plate, and a matching insert ring. I spaced the bolt holes so that the adaptor can also bolt directly into the table slots. The assembly is p...
