Completed Locomotive Stand

Here are some photos from the Locomotive Stand project that resulted from the help given on this forum. Thanks to all who contributed. The stand is 8 feet long and 32.5" from the floor to the rails. It will support a Little Engines 4-8-4 "Old" Northern. The gauge is 7 1/2". It is...

Re: Right Angle Head for the Bridgeport clone

Since I leave in a machinery desert, questions are being asked of the online sellers. One has been quite forthright and says there is a “wobble”, which unfortunately is difficult to quantify

Re: Right Angle Head for the Bridgeport clone

How much side to side play on the R-8 arbor inside the Bridgeport right angle head is acceptable before one is suspecting a bearing issue?

Re: H6 brake valves

Russ, I would love to take you up on your offer. I have relatives in Portland so going down with the wife and meeting you there is viable. Also, in the better weather I can fly to Hood River and meet you if that is an option. I will send you my email in a PM sometime this week and we can look at som...

H6 brake valves

The locomotive I am building will be 7.5" guage and 1/8" scale. Since I have no experience operating a Live Steam scale locomotive, is there any advantage one way or another with having an H6 brake valve set up for straight operation or automatic?
Thank you,

Right Angle Head for the Bridgeport clone

I have reached the point where it is time to purchase a Right Angle Head for my Bridgeport clone. I have a Birmingham milling machine clone with an R-8 spindle. In looking at Ebay, KBC tools, MSC and others, it appears that my choice consists of the following. Ebay: used Bridgport, used Dorian, and ...

Re: Repairing the fratured spokes on the cast iron drive wheel

Here are a couple of photos showing the damage to the spokes on the drive wheel. The cracks on most of the spokes are all the way through to the back side but I don't have any photos showing that progression. Even if this can be repaired, the concentricity of the wheel is likely not true anymore. Th...

Repairing the fratured spokes on the cast iron drive wheel

As addressed in another post the cast iron drive wheel with the cracked spokes was successfully separated from the drive axle. Replacement wheels are unobtanium from Little Engines so a repair must be effected. I'm assuming some sort of grinding out of the fracture area forming a "V" and t...

Re: Breaking the hold of Loctite

Thank you for all of your replies. Here is the end result of the the removal of the shaft from the cracked wheel. I had to build up a set of (3) 3" square tubing on each side of the press table of the press. The 10" diameter wheels would not fit in between the two stout "C" chann...

Dealing with Rusty steel

In pursuit of the building of the locomotive stand, a friend donated 20 feet of 3" square steel. Unfortunately, it had been stored outside and had a well developed coat of rust outside and inside the columns. Using a 4.5" grinder and a course wire wheel most of the exterior rust was remove...

Breaking the hold of Loctite

I made a big boo boo and cracked one of my cast iron drive wheels while pressing them on the axles. They have a 0.001" to the inch press fit and I used a tiny bit of Loctite when seating them. They are also keyed with a 1/4" key. The axles boxes have a pressed on roller bearing with rubber...

What is the best height for a locomotive stand?

I am at the point where I need to weld up a locomotive work/display stand. I am building a 1.5" scale 4-8-4 Northern. I am 5' 10" and am inquiring about a preferred or appropriate height for the work stand. My work tables in the shop are 36 to 37" and this is a good working height for...
