Re: How to converge to the desired diameter when fitting pieces?

In this ancient post, Harold_V explains why "sneaking up" is a bad idea, outlines a better procedure that works really well, and suggests removing the last few tenths of material by polishing rather than trying to machine it away.

Re: Digital caliper accuracy

That said, and like the others suggested, your testing should be done with shim stock, a feeler gauge, or some other solid medium of a known thickness. Unless, of course, Mr Ron's goal in the first place is to measure the thickness of the paper! At this point we don't yet really know what he's tryi...

Re: Digital caliper accuracy

What can you determine from these readings, that the paper is not a uniform thickness or the caliper is at fault? Neither, in my opinion. Notice that the fourth digit in all your measurements is either a zero or a five. That's a very strong indication that the caliper displays its results to only t...

Re: Road trips are always an adventure.....

We used to put all 5 of us in that car and pull our 17 ft. Thistle sailboat to sailing events. Same here except I had a 1971 Super Beetle and a 16 foot Hobie Cat. My best story was returning to the car at a bowling alley one evening and finding the accelerator pedal lying against the floorboard wit...

Re: Monitor for Acad

Is there a way that I can change the aspect ratio of my wide screen monitor so circles appear on the screen as circles and not ovals? The aspect ratio of the monitor is fixed by its physical construction. Your video card needs to be set to a resolution that matches the monitor's aspect ratio. And m...

Slice and Dice

These bosses will be made as a strip and then sliced off with a slitting saw. I love that technique when it can be used to make a bunch of identical parts. I used it some time ago to machine a blank from which I could then quickly slice off the parts for a bunch of miniature aluminum clothespins. -...

Yup. We don't want this to cross over into politics and religion. This isn't the place for debating that stuff.

Re: Crosshead machining woes

My biggest problem with trying to construct a locomotive is order of operations in machining castings. Wish there was a novice procedure - 1, 2, 3 .. I don't have enough knowledge or experience to make suggestions related to your immediate problem. As for the "order of operations" thing, though, I ...
