Re: whats up with this cut

Mike, this might be a really dumb question, but is some part of your set up bumping into something else? I'm wondering because it's apparent that something changes between the clean cut and the chatter cut. Just for grins, check that the headstock spindle hasn't loosened.

Re: Grizzly G0516

By the way - you don't have to rewire the mill. A PC power supply cable plugs right onto the end of the mill cable. If you're concerned about amps, find a cable for a 1000W power supply. You can pick these up for CHEAP at your local PC repair joint - if you don't have a couple laying around the hous...

Re: whats up with this cut

Okay, so what is wrong with going high with the rake and shallow with the clearance? If the clearance rubs and keeps the rake from diving.... This is a very interesting thread. I've been busy grinding away some hhs blanks and I need to understand what I'm trying to accomplish rather than just follow...

Splitting a G0516 into a separate lathe and mill

I'm only posting this because I've read other guys talk about replacing the cord end on the mill. DON'T DO IT! A standard PC power supply cord will take the mill cord end and convert it to a standard 3-prong plug. In addition it'll give you another 3' or so of reach. If you ever decide to put the mi...

Re: The Sweet Spot - What's going on there?

Update: I got the points on the rest of the screws. I made what was essentially a large, thick round nut that covered most of the screw, threaded the center hole, and chucked that up. Worked very well. I was able to point the screws in two passes, one heavy (about 90%) and one light just to finish i...

Re: G0516 Chip Pan

Torchmd, I found a source for used aluminum printing press plates. The price is definitely right! And, yes, the compound mounting is clearly weak. I'm seeing the "back" of the compound lift by almost 1/8" when I get caught by a chip during a cutoff. I'm thinking it'll be this weekend'...

Re: The Sweet Spot - What's going on there?

Fantastic info! Thanks to you all. And Mike finally answered the initial question - there is no "sweet spot". The initial pressure was required to overcome using the wrong tool in a weak set up. I've got another dozen of these to do. I'll stiffen the setup and use HHS :D That'll be Lesson ...

Yeah, Glenn, that was the 5th edge I chipped last nite. Decided I'd done enough damage and went to eat dinner. :D The tool cuts moving away from the chuck.

Re: The Sweet Spot - What's going on there?

The lathe is a Grizzly G0516. The setup is shown in the following pictures. And, thank you Harold, I'm very glad to have found you all.

Re: The Sweet Spot - What's going on there?

The point I was talking about is the end of the finished cap screw. If I were high or low with the tool, I'd leave a flat on the end of the cap screw with a diameter of twice the error of the tool elevation. (wouldn't I?)

Re: The Sweet Spot - What's going on there?

I'll post a pic of my setup tonite when I get home. They're 1 1/2" cap screws. I'm sure they're not made from anything exotic ($0.50 each). I'm using a lock nut from an adjustable tool holder and a small washer to make a flange at the cap. The 3-jaw is holding the cap, with the washer pressing ...
