Is this how you make old lathes out of new lathes? If you tubes are outside the rules please let me know.

Barrel removal..
About 10 years ago I built a barrel vise and an action wrench to remove mauser barrels. For the first time in years I removed the barrel from an action, this was a 1912 mauser, which is a 98 mauser made for Chile by Steyr in Austria. It never ceases to amaze me how tight a barrel can be. I am puttin...

Re: I made a speedi sleeve.
Harold, I am happy to report that it is not leaking. I measured it and it is within .001" in thickness, I made a driver and it pressed on pretty easy, with a 4 lb hammer, but I just had to tap it. I put a little silicone on the the shaft near the inner end, just to seal any oil path along the s...

Re: I made a speedi sleeve.
Harold, it is a bit too hard to machine with HSS. It worked well with carbide. It cut pretty bright. I sanded it up to 3000 grit, then used my secret weapon, which is a buffing wheel on a bosch skill saw, with no foot on it. I polished it with that. Volkswagen does not put the seal on the hub of the...

I made a speedi sleeve.
my VW diesel has about 200k miles on it. I tried twice to get a front seal to hold oil. There is quite a groove in the crankshaft where the front seal rides. A speedi sleeve is not available for this size of shaft, so I made one. I have some #410 SS that is big enough. I bored a piece of it to size,...

Cutting engine timing belt pulleys..
Gentlemen: Hello after a long winter. I had covid, and am just getting back into the shop. I am feeling good, even riding my bicycle. The problem I am working on... A buddy wants to put a VW diesel engine in his boat. He has experience with Volvo engines being hard on timing belts, as the timing pul...

Re: Cutting a chamber
Bill/Glenn. I am well stocked with work holding tools, an 8" and a 12" 4 jaw, and a 10" adjustable 3 jaw, which is my favorite, as well as a 5c collet chuck. Indicating on the bore is not an issue. What is an issue is supporting the end in the headstock, as a barrel would not reach th...

Cutting a chamber
Gentlemen: My lathe is more than 26" through the headstock. how would you feel about cutting a chamber with the barrel in a collet and the chambered end supported by a steady rest? I cannot support the back end with a spider. I have not cut a chamber before. But I have a reamer, and would happi...

I made a Picatinny Rail for my Mk III Ross
Good Day Gentlemen: About 25 years ago I had a gunsmith put a 7mm barrel on a Mk III Ross military rifle. I got this rifle in a trade, and it had of course been a 303 Brit. It was far beyond restoration. I wanted to approximate the performance of a 280 Ross, without the associated problems of Brass,...

Does anyone sharpen endmills?
I am not sure they are worth sharpening, but I have a small box of 2 and 4 flute, both HSS and Carbide that I would like sharpened. I do not have enough to justify buying a good machine to grind them with.
Thanks

Re: After only 20 years of owning it.
I see I am not the only one with these problems. After seeing how much a new 16x48 lathe costs these days, I am seriously committed to mine.
