Re: fuel topic

bill shields, everyone at NJLS always to this day still busts my chops about making coal dust bricks. but it's too much work. just sifting the dust out and blending anthracite to keep the smoke down is enough work. :D

Re: fuel topic

welsh is great, well too good actually. but it just didn't have that good sulphur smell to it. Hmmm. Maybe I'm missing something, but I''m having a hard time thinking that it's sulfur smell that you're missing. I grew up in a smelter town (Midvale, Utah) where sulfur dioxide was emitted by the ton ...

Re: Norfolk Western Y6B live steam First Run

being a compound, probably very quiet stack talk. The high pressure cylinders can't really be heard, then they are feeding the low pressure cylinders. so the exhaust pressure hitting the exhaust stand is way less on that than simple articulated or certainly traditional non articulated like a LE 4-8...

Re: fuel topic

The problem that we have with the smaller fireboxes is that just getting the currently available coal to burn is a never ending problem. Hello My Friends It seems that Dan didn't read my post. I explained that I knew 5344 probably never had the oval plate. Let's see you prove it. 5344 was a test bed for many features such as streamlining. She had two different streamline treatments. Different tenders, different drivers, roller beari...

Re: fuel topic

Personally, I like the challange of coal firing. I started with my first live steam engine at 14 years old and learned that maintaining the correct fire in the box was paramount to keeping the pressure up. Too much, too little, too deep here and too shallow there were all part of having a good day ...
